Wal-Mart Phases Out PVC Packaging

CHEJ'S BE SAFE and PVC Campaigns spent months talking with Wal-Mart's environmental consultant to strongly urge them to phase out PVC, and Greenpeace, CPA and others offered assistance. We then worked with a coalition of groups, including Corporate Ethics International, to recommend a PVC phase out and other sustainable environmental actions. On October 27, 2005, Wal-Mart's CEO stated, "We're replacing PVC packaging for our private brands with alternatives that are more sustainable and recyclable within the next two years." While this announcement only addresses Wal-Mart's private label brands, it is a notable first step in addressing Wal-Mart's sale of PVC and other products! And, there are still many outstanding issues Wal-Mart needs to address, such as the concerns raised by key labor advocates.

"...Wal-Mart said it will show preference to factories in China that participate in a "green company program" where the company will show preference to those suppliers and their factories involved in such a program.

"We are also committed to reducing our solid waste from U.S. stores and clubs by 25 percent in the next three years," Scott said. "We're replacing PVC packaging for our private brands with alternatives that are more sustainable and recyclable within the next two years."

Scott delivered the speech on the eve of the company's annual two-day conference for analysts at its Bentonville, Ark., headquarters."
