BE SAFE Campaign for Precaution
BE SAFE promotes precautionary action to prevent pollution and eliminate environmental health threats.  We organize grassroots actions on environmental hazards, support local and state efforts to adopt precautionary policies, provide resources to a national network of groups and activists and sponsor campaigns to convince corporations to make safer products.

BE SAFE is a campaign of the Center for Health, Environment and Justice.  CHEJ is a national, nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that provides organizing and technical assistance to grassroots community organizations nationwide. The center was founded in 1981 by Lois Gibbs, who together with her neighbors won the relocation of more than 900 families from their neighborhood after it was contaminated by chemicals leaking from the Love Canal landfill in Niagara Falls, NY.  CHEJ's mission is to build healthy communities with social justice, economic well-being, and democratic governance.

CHEJ's philosophy is to teach and empower by helping grassroots groups and individuals (including interns) build upon their strengths. Through our organizing, leadership development, research and technical assistance, we empower individuals with skills and information to make sound judgments and become part of the political decision making process to protect health and our natural resources.

BE SAFE Internship Program
Interns work on a variety of topics such as chemical reform policies, corporate campaigns, environmental reports and national and state advocacy campaigns and events to promote precautionary action on toxics and other environmental hazards. In addition to working on special projects, interns will gain insight into the complexities of environmental issues that involve many different players, an appreciation of science for the public interest, the importance of data in advocacy and a respect for the power of informed citizens. Interns are given tasks to match their interests, skills and background with CHEJ's need, and are directed by the BE SAFE Coordinator.
