USGBC Final Report: PVC an Unhealthy Building Material

Health and environmental leaders testified in support of a Maryland bill that would ban phthalates and bisphenol A from children's toys, baby products, and cosmetics in the state. HP Eliminating Millions of Pounds of PVC Packaging
HP has announced they are eliminating 6.8 million pounds of PVC packaging in response to health and environmental concerns. HP joins other companies including Wal-Mart, Microsoft, and Johnson and Johnson in phasing out PVC packaging. [Learn more.]

CHEJ Responds to Wal-Mart Chemicals and Packaging Policies
Wal-Mart unveiled a new safer chemicals policy as well as a packaging scorecard ranking suppliers on sustainable packaging. Wal-Mart gave PVC the worst possible rating as a packaging material.

Formosa PVC Plant Urged To Revise Safety Technology After Major Explosion
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB) has come out with a new report urging Formosa Plastics to revise safety technology at their Texas PVC plant after a 2005 explosion that injured 16 workers. Another explosion at their Illinois PVC plant killed 5 workers in 2004, which is still under investigation.

Olympia, WA Says Yes to Less Toxics and No to PVC
The Olympia City Council unanimously adopted a resolution to reduce the purchase and use of pesticides and persistent toxic chemicals. The resolution will ensure that the most toxic pesticides are not used in city parks and directs the city to reduce purchases of products such as PVC pipes, chlorine-bleached paper, and mercury thermostats.

Leading Manufacturer to Eliminate Use of PVC in Interior of Children's Lunchboxes
Children's lunchbox manufacturer InGEAR, has reached an agreement to eliminate lead risks to children from their products. The company also agreed to eliminate its use of PVC plastic in the interior of lunchboxes, as PVC often contains high lead levels.

NYC to Reduce Purchase of PVC!
On December 21st the New York City Council passed legislation that will reduce the City’s purchase of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plastic, Lead, Mercury, Toxic Flame Retardants, and other hazardous products, wielding its $11 billion annual purchasing budget to drive markets for safer, environmentally friendly products.

Microsoft Completes Phase Out of Poison Plastic
Microsoft has joined the fast-growing ranks of major corporations demonstrating concern about the environmental health impacts of their products or packaging by phasing out PVC plastic. Microsoft announced that by the end of 2005 it will have completed its PVC packaging phase out, which has already resulted in the elimination of 361,000 pounds of PVC since July, 2005.

NY Attorney General Eliot Spitzer Announces Recall of Thousands of Vinyl Lunchboxes Containing Lead
Parents who are concerned that lead in vinyl lunchboxes could be putting their children's health at risk now have some recourse. New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer today announced a recall of 21 vinyl lunchboxes containing lead.
